Abstract Compression

This exhibition takes its name from the eponymous series of new works by Billy Myles-Berkouwer. With this series, the artist reflects a state in which human experience and expression is increasingly mediated by technology. The works engender a visual experience akin to Abstract Expressionist paintings, but are composed of sumptuous colour gradients and razor-sharp, gestural lines which would normally be found on-screen. By adapting the tools of digital imagery (such as the digital brush and the gradient fill tools), the artist produces artwork that couldn’t have been made in a previous historical moment.

The collection to be displayed at Mill Tye Gallery is the result of a focused period of work since Myles-Berkouwer moved from London to his studio in Sudbury, Suffolk this summer. The exhibition follows from the success of his two-person exhibition The Warehouse Show, and the group exhibition Enter the Vacuum heldin South-East London.

The works on display include a body of paintings, signed and limited artist prints, and sculpture.
