Service Description

DRAWING WITH LIGHT Approximately 3 hours in duration. A drawing and sculpture art class under the guidance of artist Terry Flower. Date: Thursday 9th May 2024 Time: 9:30am to 12:30pm OUTLINE: A 3-hour, tutor led, workshop working from still life to produce drawings that progressively will work towards a 3D outcome in free standing card. PROCESS: The workshop is comprised of three elements that are sequential. Each element builds upon the previous assignment taking us through different approaches to drawing and making. At all stages the tutor will give advice and guidance to help students achieve successful outcomes. 1. We will begin by sketching from a monochrome still life that will be set up in the studio. The drawing emphasis here will be upon tone and line. 2. The second element will be to work from our initial drawing to create a collage focusing upon tone as well as improving (under guidance) the composition of our first drawing. 3. The final element will be to convert our tonal drawings into free standing tabletop sculptures. Working upon card initial drawings will be cut and scored so that selected elements can be folded and released from the card. MATERIALS: Paper and card will be supplied but students will be asked to bring their own sketching equipment, charcoal pencils etc. In addition, students are asked to bring a sharp craft knife. This class is suitable for all levels from beginners to the more experienced artist. ACCESS: The course takes place in the upper gallery which is not suitable for wheelchair access. SPACES ARE LIMITED ON OUR COURSES. EARLY BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL. ABOUT YOUR TUTOR: Since graduating from Goldsmiths College, London in 1986 Terry Flower has been a committed teacher and practitioner. His theme is landscape, which is explored through various media including sculpture, painting, photography and bookworks. “My work is a prompt, encouraging the exploration of the landscape around us, the landscape of today and at this moment in time. No place is mundane, each has some magic to offer and rewards those with time enough to pause and engage. One does not need an exotic location to begin, it’s out there in the most ordinary of places happening every day.”
