Service Description
Workshop 3: The Sense of Place Join artist Terry Flower for a workshop that pairs words with imagery to evoke the essence of the local landscape. Date: Tuesday 24th June Time: 9:30am to 12:30pm Duration: Approximately 3 hours Workshop Overview: In this immersive workshop, participants will explore the relationship between poetry, imagery, and place, creating art that expresses their personal connection to the landscape. We’ll begin with a short, reflective walk along the river Stour, where Terry will share his poems inspired by this setting. As we walk, participants will gather their own visual and written responses, sketching and jotting down thoughts that capture the atmosphere of the area. Back in the gallery, participants will transform these observations into unique artworks that combine text and imagery. Working with materials like pastel, charcoal, or watercolour, they will pair their words and sketches to produce thoughtful compositions that capture the “sense of place” they felt during the walk. This workshop is ideal for anyone interested in merging visual art with creative writing, using the local landscape as a powerful source of inspiration. Key Takeaways: • Skills in gathering sensory details and expressing them visually and textually • Techniques for pairing text with image to create balanced, compelling compositions • An introduction to different media (e.g., pastel, charcoal) for capturing mood and texture • A completed artwork that reflects a personal connection to the landscape of Mill Tye. Refreshments: Tea, coffee, cakes, and biscuits will be provided. What to wear: Comfortable clothing that you can move around in with ease. As some of the class could take place outside, please bring warm waterproof clothes and sensible footwear. Access: Please note this workshop is held in the upper gallery, which is not accessible for wheelchair users. We apologise for any inconvenience. Spaces are limited, so early booking is highly recommended to secure your place. ABOUT YOUR TUTOR: Since graduating from Goldsmiths College, London, in 1986, Terry Flower has dedicated his career to both teaching and creating art.
