David Trenow
Sculptor | Slate, Stone and Form
At Mill Tye Gallery, we are delighted to welcome David Trenow and a new selection of his elegant slate sculptures to our ground floor gallery. Having long admired his work, it is a privilege to finally exhibit pieces by such a distinguished and experienced sculptor.
Originally trained as a civil engineer, David later pursued his passion for the arts at Hornsey College of Art, studying sculpture and painting under Hubert Dalwood and Maxim Adam-Tessier, whose teaching inspired his enduring love of stone carving. Over a career spanning more than fifty years, David has developed a refined and distinctive approach to working with slate — a material he values for its tactile quality and the quiet beauty of its finished surface.
David has exhibited widely across the UK and Europe, and his sculptures are held in both public and private collections in the USA, Denmark, and throughout East Anglia, including Aldeburgh, Norwich, Bawdsey Manor, the Minories, and other notable venues in Colchester, where he is based.
He is also featured in Open Air Sculpture in Britain by W.J. Strachan (A. Zwemmer / Tate Gallery, 1984), a testament to his enduring contribution to British sculpture.
David Trenow’s work continues to exemplify craftsmanship, balance, and the quiet power of form — qualities that resonate deeply within the gallery’s sculptural collection.
