In this month’s Art Club session, students took their first steps into the world of batik through an engaging wax resist activity led by Eleanor Mills. Using white wax crayons and vibrant fabric dyes, the group explored a simplified version of the traditional technique—tracing floral designs and watching as the wax repelled the dye to reveal beautiful, delicate patterns.

Although the group was smaller this time, the session was filled with creativity and focused exploration. With Eleanor and Lucy working closely alongside them, students gained confidence and began adding personal flair to their flower compositions. The results were as unique as they were colourful.
This hands-on session was a perfect introduction to the more advanced batik work planned for June, where students will experiment with hot wax in a traditional setting. The enthusiasm in the room suggested that everyone is ready—and excited—for the next artistic adventure!
With each session, Eleanor’s creative journey with the students continues to evolve. This her fifth workshop marked another exciting step towards An Appliqué Afternoon at Mill Tye Gallery. The energy and imagination on display promise something truly special in the final exhibition.

We’re looking ahead with great anticipation to An Appliqué Afternoon, opening this September. This exhibition will highlight how each workshop —like this one — has contributed to Eleanor’s developing body of work, while celebrating the vibrant creativity nurtured within our local community.
