Service Description
Architecture in Paint, Collage & Stitch A Textile Workshop with Dorothy Donaldson Date: Tuesday 30th June Time: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM Price: £60 per person Explore the beauty and character of historical architecture through expressive textile techniques in this inspiring workshop led by Dorothy Donaldson. You’ll learn how to interpret architectural features such as domes, towers, archways, crenellations, columns, and capitals using a combination of painted fabrics, collage, and hand embroidery. Working from a range of inspirational images, you’ll begin by developing a simple outline sketch before building your composition with carefully selected silk fabrics and cotton organdie—some pre-painted to give you a rich and varied starting point. Your design will be constructed as a fabric collage on interfacing, with the option to incorporate foiling using Bondaweb for added texture and light. Hand embroidery will then bring your piece to life, adding depth, definition, and intricate detail. Stitches explored will include satin stitch, bullion knots, French knots, trellis stitch, coral stitch, blanket stitch, fly stitch, and back stitch. All techniques and stages will be clearly demonstrated, with plenty of guidance to support your creative decisions around composition and colour. What’s included: • A selection of silk fabrics and cotton organdie (including pre-painted pieces) • Interfacing • Bondaweb • Foils • A range of hand embroidery threads What to bring: • Fabric cutting scissors • Thread cutting scissors • Milliners needles (approx. sizes 3–9) • Tapestry needle (approx. size 26) • Optional: any stranded cotton, sateen threads, or fine perle (size 12) from your own collection This workshop is suitable for those with some basic stitching experience and offers a wonderful opportunity to explore architectural forms through a rich and tactile textile approach. Refreshments: Tea, coffee, cakes, and biscuits will be provided. Please bring a packed lunch. What to wear: Comfortable clothing or an apron, as some materials may mark fabrics. Access: Please note this workshop is held in the upper gallery and is not wheelchair accessible. Spaces are limited, so early booking is recommended.
