Beyond the Line: An Abstract Journey with Wendy J. Allen MA Dates: Tuesday 22nd July and Tuesday 29th July 2025 Time: Two morning sessions each from 9:30am to 12:30pm Tutor: Wendy J. Allen MA Price: £60 per person. (Covers both classes) Workshop Structure (Two Days) Overview: A two-part, intermediate-level workshop for those familiar with drawing/painting basics, focused on developing an abstract composition on canvas. Participants will be guided through stages of conceptual development, experimentation and refinement, culminating in one finished piece. Day One – Exploration & Foundation Time: 9:30am – 12:30pm (with breaks for tea, coffee and cake) Introduction & Objectives - Overview of abstract painting - The aim: to complete one personal, expressive canvas Warm-Up Exercises - Quick mark-making and colour mixing on paper - Experimenting with gesture, texture, and layering Mini Presentation - A look at key abstract artists (e.g. Kandinsky, Joan Mitchell, Gerhard Richter) - Discussion about form, emotion, and intention in abstraction Concept Development - Personal theme or emotion to explore - Thumbnail sketches or small abstract studies Start on Final Canvas - Initial layers and composition - Guided individual feedback Wrap-up Homework: reflect on the day, note what to adjust or develop in Part 2 Day Two – Refinement & Completion Time: 9:30am – 12:30pm (with breaks for tea, coffee and cake) Welcome Back & Review - Group discussion: challenges and intentions moving forward Studio Practice - Continued work on canvas - One-on-one guidance with Wendy - Focus on contrast, balance, and composition - Encouragement of visual language development Final Painting Session - Polishing and resolving the work Closing Circle (30 mins) - Group share: each artist presents their finished piece and reflects on the process - Discussion on next steps or how to continue abstract work at home and if you would like to submit your final work into the Christmas Exhibition. This workshop will concentrate on using acrylics. You will need a starter pack of acrylic paints and some synthetic-hair brushes, plus 2B or 3B pencils. Please either buy a canvas board or preferably a square stretched canvas 30cm x 30cm to work on for the final piece. (You can buy a reasonably priced stretched canvas from The Works) Be aware that the final work may have to be transported wet on the final day. We have desk easels available to use.

Refunds and Cancellations: • Cancellations up to 7 days before the course start date: Participants may cancel and receive a refund, subject to a £25 cancellation fee. • Cancellations within 72 hours of the course start date: Refunds will not be issued. • Non-attendance: No refunds will be provided for students who do not attend due to illness, personal commitments, or professional obligations. Course Changes or Cancellations by Mill Tye Gallery: • Mill Tye Gallery reserves the right to cancel or amend courses due to unforeseen circumstances. In such cases, participants will be offered an alternative date or a full refund. Access: • Workshops take place in the upper gallery, which is not wheelchair accessible. • If you have any physical disabilities or special learning needs, please notify us in advance by emailing milltye@icloud.com or calling 01787 376796, and we will do our best to accommodate you. Safety: • Prohibited items: Aerosol fixative sprays, smoking, mobile phones, radios, and personal stereos are not permitted during workshops. • Personal belongings: Participants are responsible for their belongings at all times. The gallery cannot accept liability for loss or damage to personal items. • Participants must take all work and belongings with them at the end of the class.
