Join us for a rare opportunity to learn from acclaimed photographer Roj Whitelock in an intimate, half-day workshop focused on the magic of natural light portrait photography. Whether you're looking to take more professional images of friends and family, or you’re eager to refine your creative eye, this hands-on session is designed to help beginners and intermediate photographers gain confidence and control behind the camera — without relying on complex lighting setups or expensive equipment. The workshop takes place in the inspiring first-floor studio space at Mill Tye Gallery, where Roj will guide you through how to see and shape light, compose engaging portraits and bring out the best in your subject using only what’s naturally available. What you’ll learn: • How to read and work with natural light • The essentials of exposure: aperture, shutter speed & ISO • Understanding and using light direction to shape your subject • Simple techniques to modify light using diffusion and reflectors • Practical guidance on posing and working with a live model • Tips for shooting compelling portraits with confidence and creativity Workshop Schedule: 9:30am Welcome, tea & coffee, introductions 9:40am Understanding the exposure triangle - shutter speed, aperture, ISO (20 mins) 10:00am Understanding qualities of light - hard, soft, specular, diffuse (15 mins) 10:15am Light in the space – evaluating natural light in the gallery (15 mins) 10:30am Observe the quality of light on our model and take photographs (30 mins) 11:00am Understanding direction of light - on and off axis (15 mins) 11:15am Guided shooting: Observe the direction of light on our model and take photographs (30 mins) 11:45am Modifying Light – diffusion, reflection, negative fill (15 mins) 12:00pm Modify the light on our model and take photographs (30 mins) 12:30pm Bringing it all together - creative exploration (30 mins) What to bring: • DSLR or mirrorless camera (fully charged) • Empty memory card • Laptop and card reader/USB lead (optional, for viewing images after the session) What to wear: Comfortable clothing and lightweight shoes — you’ll be moving around the space and working with natural light, so dress comfortably. Please note: This workshop will be held in our upper gallery, which is not accessible by wheelchair.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellation Policy Course Bookings: • Places on our courses are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis upon receipt of payment. • Submitting an application form without payment does not reserve a place on the course. • To guarantee a place, all applicants must pay in full after submitting their form. Refunds and Cancellations: • Cancellations up to 7 days before the course start date: Participants may cancel and receive a refund, subject to a £25 cancellation fee. • Cancellations within 72 hours of the course start date: Refunds will not be issued. • Non-attendance: No refunds will be provided for students who do not attend due to illness, personal commitments, or professional obligations. Course Changes or Cancellations by Mill Tye Gallery: • Mill Tye Gallery reserves the right to cancel or amend courses due to unforeseen circumstances. In such cases, participants will be offered an alternative date or a full refund. Access: • Workshops take place in the upper gallery, which is not wheelchair accessible. • If you have any physical disabilities or special learning needs, please notify us in advance by emailing milltye@icloud.com or calling 01787 376796, and we will do our best to accommodate you. Safety: • Prohibited items: Aerosol fixative sprays, smoking, mobile phones, radios, and personal stereos are not permitted during workshops. • Personal belongings: Participants are responsible for their belongings at all times. The gallery cannot accept liability for loss or damage to personal items. • Participants must take all work and belongings with them at the end of the class.
