Service Description

Renaissance Reimagined A Special Textile Workshop with Dorothy & Bruce Ronaldson Date: Tuesday 2nd December 2025 Time: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM Mill Tye Gallery, Cornard Mills, Mill Tye, Great Cornard. Step into the rich world of the Italian Renaissance in this special, end-of-year textile workshop—where art history meets creative embroidery. We’re delighted to welcome Bruce Ronaldson, artist and specialist in Italian Renaissance art, who will begin the day with a fascinating illustrated presentation. His talk will explore the origins and meaning of Renaissance painting, with a particular focus on the depiction of fabric, costume, and symbolism in this golden age of art. Following this, Dorothy Ronaldson, textile artist and tutor, will take you deeper into the textures and materials of the period. Using a curated selection of artworks, she’ll guide you through the styles, techniques, and practicalities of Renaissance dressmaking—from ornate sleeves and pleated skirts to the layering of silk, velvet and embroidered trims. In the afternoon, you’ll create your own embroidered fabric collage inspired by the morning’s insights. Using sumptuous Sudbury silk, layered textiles, and hand-stitching techniques, you’ll reimagine historical fashion through a contemporary lens—resulting in a richly textured textile sample to keep. All materials will be provided, including: • Plain and decorative fabrics (mainly Sudbury silk) • Embroidery threads • Interfacing and mixed media embellishments Please bring: • Fabric and thread cutting scissors • A medium-sized Crewel, Milliners, and Tapestry needle • A packed lunch Refreshments: Tea, coffee, biscuits, Mince Pies and Stollen available. Please bring a packed lunch. Location: Upper Gallery (Please note, not wheelchair accessible) Spaces are limited – early booking is essential. Why join this workshop? Whether you’re passionate about art, textiles, or simply curious about the secrets hidden in historical paintings, this immersive day is the perfect way to celebrate creativity. Leave feeling inspired, informed and with your own Renaissance-inspired textile piece to treasure.
