Suffolk Skies & Stour Valley Stitches A Textile Workshop with Dorothy Ronaldson
. Date: Thursday 21st May 2026 Time: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM Price: £60 per person Join us for a creative day inspired by the sweeping big skies, water meadows, and gentle curves of the River Stour. In this workshop, Dorothy Ronaldson will guide you through creating your own stitched Suffolk or Stour Valley landscape, composed as either a traditional scene or a more contemporary interpretation—both approaches will be demonstrated, along with examples for inspiration. Working with fabric collage and a variety of expressive hand stitches, you’ll learn how to build depth, texture, and movement within your landscape. Stitches include bullion and French knots, fly stitch, feather stitch, chain stitch, running stitch, and whipped stitching. You’ll also have the opportunity to paint your own fabrics—including luxurious Sudbury silk—to take home for future projects. All stages will be demonstrated, from composing your landscape to ideas for mounting and framing your finished piece. What’s included: A selection of plain and painted fabrics (mainly silk) Firm iron-on interfacing Sheer ribbon Angelina fibres Embroidery threads (fine perle, stranded, sateen) Fabric paints, brushes, and droppers What to bring: Fabric and thread cutting scissors Medium-size Crewel and Milliners needles (These items can be purchased from specialist stores such as Lingards in Sudbury or online.) This workshop is ideal for those with some stitch experience and offers an inspiring introduction to a beautiful and versatile textile art form that you can continue to explore at home. Refreshments: Tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits provided. Please bring a packed lunch. What to wear: Comfortable clothing suitable for fabric painting, or an apron. Access: Please note this workshop is held in the upper gallery, which is not accessible for wheelchair users. We apologise for any inconvenience. Spaces are limited, so early booking is essential.
