Hand Woven Landscapes: From Mill to Loom
Summer Artist in Residence, Mill Tye Gallery
July — August 2026
Hand Woven Landscapes presents new work by textile designer Helena Powell, developed for and during her Summer Artist in Residence. Drawing on landscape as an abstract idea, the exhibition explores rhythm, colour and structure through silk weaving, stripes and layered blocks of hand-painted colour, using principles from traditional Huguenot jacquard silk weaving. Visitors are invited to encounter both finished works, works in progress and to weave, gaining insight into the slow, methodical process of contemporary hand weaving.
The exhibition emphasises silk as both a material and a narrative thread, connecting Powell’s practice to Sudbury’s historic silk-weaving heritage while firmly rooted in contemporary and sustainable textile design. A working loom installed in the gallery allows audiences to engage directly with the process, revealing how colour, structure and material evolve from mill to loom.
