Service Description

SUMMER of ART - Evening Workshop Drawing and bookmaking workshop A talk and workshop to create a small handmade book under the guidance of Terry Flower. Approximately 3 hours in duration. Date: Thursday 11th July 2024 Time: 6pm to 9pm OUTLINE: The workshop will start with an introductory talk about my own practice and book works. We will then move on to discuss the practical aspect of the evening ahead. Examples will be shown of the possible outcomes we might create by participation in the workshop. After the introductory talk we will take a short walk from the gallery along the footpath beside the River Stour down towards Sudbury. On the walk we will gather personal responses to the location in the form of words, images/sketches, colour notes and small natural objects. These collected notes will be recorded in a sketch book provided. Back at the gallery and under supervision the notes will be used as the basis, and stimulation, for a small student specific bookwork produced under the guidance of Terry Flower. The purpose of the workshop will not be to make refined outcomes, but small proposal/sketch/ book works to stimulate more refined artworks at some future date. The day will also provide students with a template for future personal responses to landscape and a way to build on their experience of responding to landscape. MATERIALS: Sketchbooks and paper will be provided but students are asked to bring their own colouring pencils. WHAT TO WEAR: Comfortable clothing, part of the workshop will be outside walking along the River Stour, so we would also recommend bringing walking shoes a waterproof jacket. ACCESS: The course takes place in the upper gallery which is not suitable for wheelchair access. SPACES ARE LIMITED ON OUR COURSES. EARLY BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL. ABOUT YOUR TUTOR: Since graduating from Goldsmiths College, London in 1986 Terry Flower has been a committed teacher and practitioner. His theme is landscape, which is explored through various media including sculpture, painting, photography and bookworks. “My work is a prompt, encouraging the exploration of the landscape around us, the landscape of today and at this moment in time. No place is mundane, each has some magic to offer and rewards those with time enough to pause and engage. One does not need an exotic location to begin, it’s out there in the most ordinary of places happening every day.”
