Thursday evening’s Portrait Watercolour Workshop with Chris Bennett welcomed four new students to the class. All showed great promise and, like the returning participants, responded enthusiastically to the fifteen-minute demonstration Chris gave at the start of the session, painting the charming Eleanor.

As students watched and listened to Chris explain his approach, they began to understand one of the fundamental truths of painting: success lies in observing the relationships between the forms of the model and expressing those relationships so that each brush mark connects naturally to the next.
Chris describes the process as a picture unfolding on the paper “like the petals of an opening bud.”
This principle applies whether working in pencil, pastel, watercolour, or oils, and it is central to Chris’s teaching across all of his workshops.
We look forward to welcoming everyone back for the next session.
