Provencal Olives
Noel Myles is well known for his pictures of trees. His Suffolk Oaks can be seen in Private Collections as far away as 'from Moscow to New York and Melbourne to Toronto'.
Peter Rumsey and Noel Myles had been in discussion about mounting a survey of this body of work, but the temporary closure of the gallery put this on hold. In the meantime Mill Tye Gallery, in conjunction with Noel, has produced three special limited edition prints of ten copies of each that are exclusively available through the gallery.
They reflect three differing approaches to his subject. The first print is of an Olive Grove in Provence, the second titled ‘A Short Film of December’ comprises of multiple photographs taken during one month alongside the River Stour close to where the gallery is in Sudbury, Suffolk and the third is an Oak standing on the crest of a hill overlooking the Stour Valley from Henny.
Myles' work links photography and printmaking. Hundreds of photographs are taken for each subject over a period of time to provide the raw material for his compositions. 'Henny Oak' for example, comprises photographs taken during four seasons. A selection is made into a harmonious composition that evokes the broader experience of looking at his subject.
