Soda Fired Small Bowl
By Cathy D’Arcy

About Cathy

Cathy D’Arcy creates ceramic figures and vessels that emerge instinctively from her imagination, guided by curiosity, humour, and a deep enjoyment of the making process. Working primarily with earthstone clay, she decorates each piece using a range of techniques including engobes, underglaze colours, and layered glazes, often combined with varied firing methods to create depth and surface interest.

Natural variations in colour, texture, and surface are an essential part of Cathy’s process; no two pieces are ever the same. Each work is entirely individual, bearing the unique marks of hand, material, and fire.

This one-off soda-fired small bowl by local ceramicist Cathy D’Arcy is a quiet celebration of form, surface, and the unpredictability of fire. Made in earthstone clay, each bowl is shaped by hand and transformed during the soda-firing process, where vapourised soda reacts with the clay body to create distinctive markings, tonal shifts, and textured surfaces.

Natural variations in colour, texture, and surface are an essential part of the soda-firing process; no two pieces are ever the same. Each bowl is entirely individual and unrepeatable, sitting comfortably between function and sculpture.

Cathy’s work is guided by imagination and a sense of joy in making, and these bowls carry that spirit—humble in scale, yet rich in character. Ideal for everyday use or as a small sculptural object within a ceramic collection.

    Each bowl is sold individually.
Images are representative; the bowl you receive will be unique.

    Handmade in Sudbury, Suffolk, England.
